Some of my favourite song lyrics

Music is such a massive part of my life and i don’t know what I would do without it, lyrics are a huge part of this, so I decided to share ten of my favourites.

1. HEARTBEAT SLOWING DOWN BY THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS

The All-American Rejects have been one of my favourite bands for quite sometime, but these lyrics are quite a recent addition. In an interview, Tyson Ritter said the song was about something he killed, I love rawness of the lyrics, especially as he describes the thing he loved as dying as if he was watching the whole time. When you first hear this song, it hits you really hard of how honest it is, particularly the chorus. I think about these lyrics a lot and how Ritter must have felt but also what the person he ‘killed’ felt, they really have the power to change your entire mind the way you think about a person.

2. BLANK SPACE BY TAYLOR SWIFT

FullSizeRender(6)

Tired of misogynistic comments from the media, Swift wrote Blank Space as if to sarcastically show herself as the media were portraying her. In many failed relationships, one half of the party is named the ‘psycho ex’ Swift took on this persona to really show what a ‘psycho ex’ is. Plenty of male singers write about their own experiences so why shouldn’t Swift? Why is she labelled as a ‘slut’ for having the same number of partners the average woman in her twenties has? So instead of trying to explain to those who won’t listen she embodies the ‘psycho ex’ to combat the negativity from the media.

3. SUPERHERO BY 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER

Superhero

Superhero has always been one of my favourite 5SOS songs, I really wish they would do a studio version though! I’ve always connected with Superhero, which is about a boy whose life is boring and he wishes it wasn’t, the song is basically a story about how it changes in one night. My favourite lyric from the song is when he finally decides to fly. There is such a feel good factor about the lyrics. The following line is “I’m about to lose my halo” I love that line also, throwing every pressure away to have fun and actually live.

4. SO WHAT BY P!NK

P!nk is a female powerhouse. She gives me so much inspiration when I’m beginning to doubt myself, she adds fuel to the equality fires in my heart and she brings so much joy back to the world. “So, what” is about a breakup with her husband and instead of crumbling away and hiding she makes herself okay again, she’s still the same person without him and she’s just as well off. The lyrics of this song really makes the song catchy and so appealing especially when coming out of a break up.

5. PARIS BY THE 1975

A nihilist is someone who holds the belief that “nothing actually matters” that life is just meaningless and holds nothing worth caring about. He thinks that it is a shame that we’re all the same in life because we will be all the same in the ground too. Obviously I completely disagree that life is meaningless but I like to understand other people’s thoughts. However when I really think about it, it is apparent to me that we should all have the same core in life with different outer layers like we are all the same when we are dead. There should be an equality that runs through the world and people in it.

6. ELLE ME DIT BY MIKA

FullSizeRender(4)In English the lyrics mean “she tells me it is your life // do what you want, oh well” the entire song is about Mika being told to write happy songs that everyone will love if he wants to become famous and popular in the song he is also told, quite ironically, to do what he wants as it is his life. Even though they do not means this he takes this idea and uses it to fuel himself further, writing songs he would like.

7. RIOT GIRL BY GOOD CHARLOTTE

FullSizeRender(9)Riot Girl is one of my favourite Good Charlotte songs I love how they wrote a song about a boss ass woman. The narrator doesn’t feel the need to protect her, only the need to protect those in his girlfriend’s path because she is so self-assured and confident. Even though her confidence gets them kicked out of places at the end of the day it doesn’t matter because he knows she would do anything for him and he loves her more for her attitude. In a relationship, in my future, I want my significant other to treat my that way, like I am a force to be reckoned with not one to be disrespected.

8. AFTER THE STORM BY MUMFORD AND SONS

FullSizeRender(1)

This song is a recent addition, it is difficult to explain why these lyrics are so appealing to me. The song is about the idea that better times are going to come there will be grace in your heart, goodwill and elegance, the flowers in your hair make you all the more pure especially after such a storm. The pretty flowers will grow again and everything is going to be okay.

9. GOLD RUSH BY ED SHEERAN

FullSizeRender(8)

Gold Rush is one of Ed Sheeran’s best. Some of my favourite lyrics appear in this song. It sums up how many people feel about school as if it is somewhere you don’t learn a thing, personally I think you learn masses in school however while you’re actually there you don’t think the same. These lyrics also cause me to feel some anger for example “then again you know how to sing but you don’t know anything other than that” as if knowing how to sing gets you through life. Musicians are clever they create lyrics like authors and poets, stringing together words to create a feeling , the annoyance this causes me makes these lyrics so thought evoking.

10. BREATHE BY PINK FLOYD.

FullSizeRender(7)

This song really hit home for me, I’ve always wanted to travel and to see the world however I’ve always felt that time slips away too fast and I may never get the chance as travelling is so expensive. I also think that there are places around where I live that will give me things to hold on to, there are some beautiful places in the most unexpected destinations.

So there you have a piece of my life, listen to the songs and listen out for the lyrics you might hear something special in there too.
