How to: Show your parents you love them

Parents. They’re probably there to just drive you crazy but they are the most fantastic beings ever. You literally came from their body, a tiny, tiny cell from them. I think that’s one of the most wonderful things about the world, you come from another human’s love. Maybe any of these ten actions could show your parents the love you feel for them.

1. SAY I LOVE YOU

I know that this is the obvious one but when was the last time you told you parents you loved them? If you can’t remember you definitely need to tell them, you don’t have forever to do so. Maybe you will be momentarily embarrassed but really how bad is that compared to them knowing that you really do love them. Show your parents a little appreciation once in a while, let them know.

2. WRITE THEM A LETTER

If you really cannot bear to say that you love them out loud or you’d prefer a more lengthy appreciative gesture then you could always write a letter or a note for them to wake up to or got to sleep having read, unexpected thoughtful gestures can mean the world to someone. I wrote my mum a letter for her birthday a couple of years ago, she still has it and she still reads it when she has a bad day, I’ve seen her. That one gesture that was meant for one morsel of happiness and love now brings so much more.

3. MAKE THEM BREAKFAST OR DINNER

How many times have your parents made you dinner or breakfast? How many times do you think they wanted to be doing something else for themselves? How many times do you think they wished someone else could just do it? Instead of guessing why don’t you do something, maybe they’ve had a stressful day at work and you could show them you love them by preparing them a meal, a small gesture can go a long, long way.

4. MAKE THEIR BED

I always do this for my mum, every night before she gets in bed I make it for her. My step dad works nights so sleeps in the day, he makes a mess every single time that annoys my mum. Instead of letting her get annoyed, I fix that mess for her.

5. SHOW OFF YOUR TALENT

Maybe you’re good at music, write them a song. Maybe you’re good with words, make them an anagram to figure out with a secret message. Maybe you’re good at making videos, make them a video to show them how wonderful they are. Use what you can do to give back.

6. NOSTALGIA

Bringing up a memory from when you were young can remind them of the happiness they felt. Even better if you have photos to tell stories with, they will feel so wonderful instead, remembering a time when their precious baby was actually a baby.

7. ASK THEM ABOUT THEIR DAY

This is so simple but it one that speaks volumes, it shows you care about them if you’re prepared to ask about their day every day, it shows you love them. Try it, it’s the easiest one and it’s always good to check in with how they feel.

8. DO THEIR CHORES

When they go out for the day, you could complete all of their chores so that when they come back they don’t have to do them themselves. It’s the little, most thoughtful things that show your love the most.

9. CALL THEM

One call can go a long, long way. Checking in is always good, a quick call can show that person you were thinking about them, while you’re at it tell them you love them or even arrange a visit if you haven’t seen each other in a while.

10. TAKE THEM OUT

Of course this only works if you have the money and are in a position to, sometimes when things get tough they just need some time to have a break. Unexpected gifts can show a great deal about how you love someone, as long as the thought is there.

I hope you spoil your parents with love.
